Todd Aakhus, Ph.D. named Leadership West Alumnus of the Year
Todd Aakhus, Ph.D., Director of Community Partnerships for Rio Salado College was named Leadership West's Alumnus of the Year at their annual graduation ceremony on June 7th. The award is granted to an alumnus of the organization who is visibly and successfully leading in the West Valley and significantly contributing to the success of Leadership West. Aakhus graduated from Leadership West in 2007 with Class Thirteen. He is an exemplary ambassador for Leadership West, having hosted numerous events at the prestigious venue where he works, The Communiversity at Surprise. Aakhus' strength is his ability to facilitate partnerships. He connected Leadership West with important state wide entities such as AARP, Arizona Town Hall and Rio Salado College. He extends invitations to LW alumni to participate and present at a variety of speaking engagements and has facilitated meetings with potential sponsors for Leadership West. In addition, he has inspired the highest caliber candidates to apply for the Leadership West program year after year. He credits the leadership at Rio Salado for their willingness to support his participation in Leadership West. "Todd is always looking for ways for Leadership West to be visible and useful in the community," said Kathy Knecht, Leadership West's Executive Director. Aakhus was surprised by the recognition at the Class XVIII Graduation on June 7th. He was given a plaque and a gift card to an outdoor retailer as a token of gratitude. "Each time we can improve the lives of the citizens in the West Valley through our efforts, we can feel a great sense of purpose in our work," he said.
