Tina Williams, director of Young Actors Theatre, said Johns always took advantage of YAT programs including Studio Singers, a touring group of high school students who sing and act around town.

"She's always been a good singer, it's in her blood," Williams said.

One day, maybe," said Tina Williams, co-founder and executive director of YAT. "And when (the student-actors) came down that aisle (on opening night) with 'Tradition,' I burst into tears. That was definitely a moment."

That kind of close call (and happy beginning) is enough to make a theater owner's life and career flash before her eyes. Which, given the personal history and significance Williams and her mother, YAT co-founder Betty Farkas, attach to "Fiddler on the Roof," it may very well have done.
Her father, Zoltan Farkas, died in 1984 just as Williams and her mother were bringing their school, then called Tallahassee Children's Theatre, into its current space on Glenview Drive.
"My dad's picture is in there," Williams said. "It's very much the Farkas theater.
In 1952, their daughter Tina was born into a life of glamour and creativity. Tina modeled with her mother as a child, living in New York but keeping roots in the South. In 1962, the family moved to Tallahassee and Zoli, the natural entrepreneur taking a break from New York, helped found the LeMoyne Center for the Visual Arts. Tina and her mother stayed in Tallahassee when he returned to New York for another business venture.
Tina graduated from high school in 1970, followed her mother's footsteps to Wesleyan College and attended the Professional Children's School in New York.
"Even though we have over 300 students, it's still the same as though it was 15," Williams said.
Tina Williams has been an enthusiastic supporter of her daughter's career. She learns everything her daughter learns for her shows.
"I knew every word to every song (in 'Hairspray')," she said.
