Tallahassee Democrat | 04/08/2005 | Telling the stories of everyday lives, 8 April 2005 [cached]
Sharing the spotlight with the Democrat made perfect sense to YAT founder Tina Williams.
"The newspaper tells stories of people's lives and what happens every day," Williams said."This play tells the stories of everyday lives, too."
In casting the production, Williams departed from YAT's usual policy of using young actors even in adult roles. The show's dramatis personae includes current YAT company members and faculty, as well as several alumni. For some of the latter, it's a return to familiar dramatic territory.
"Jeff Futch (a 1983 YAT grad) played Doc Gibbs when he was just out of high school in 1985 (when YAT first produced 'Our Town')," Williams said.
When it came to casting the Stage Manager, the play's wise overseer and narrator, Williams turned to the Democrat newsroom and business operations, not usually considered hotbeds of thespian excellence.
"We had the whole show printed in newspaper format so they can follow the action (and find their lines)," Williams said of her Stage Managers.
