Six Degrees: Personal Blog of Timothy Williams, Founder/CEO

Timothy Williams Principal / Founder & CEO
From launching his first tech startup with $500,000 in angel investment at the age of 21, to later being hired as the Marketing Director for one of the world's first online betting sites (relocating to the Central American paradise of Costa Rica in the process), to later taking over as a Brand Manager for the world's largest publicly traded online gambling company, with a market cap of $3 billion USD and an 8-figure annual marketing budget; Mr. Williams has a depth of experience in high-stakes, high-adrenaline marketing and communications roles - a level of real world education that money could never buy.
After the passage of legislation in the United States aimed at curtailing the growth of the online betting industry there, Williams departed the gaming industry, accepting a role as Managing Director for one of the Los Angeles area's top PR agencies, Pop Culture PR - an award-winning consumer and lifestyle public relations agency. During his tenure at Pop Culture PR, the agency was heralded by the press and clients alike - "Top 10 Marketing Campaigns of All Time," said Entrepreneur Magazine. "Artful Marketers" is what the New York Times coined the agency.
Williams later founded DIME PR in 2008, believing that the PR agency model of the past would begin to fail to meet modern communications demands. "I wanted to combine my experience in traditional PR with what I saw as a coming wave of 'digital PR'. I'm not only talking about 'social media' which seems to be the latest agency pitch these days; I'm talking about a fundamental difference in the way that people find the media they consume; the way they interact with it; the actions it triggers; the ways in which they share that information with others, how these mediums interact with each other, and how they can all be used together - including so-called traditional or mainstream media - to deliver our clients' message," Williams says.
Keeping it in the family, Kyle also happens to be the nephew of DIME PR Founder and CEO, Timothy Williams.

about us > biography of Timothy Williams, Founder & CEO

Timothy Williams, a resident of Costa Rica , has led a truly amazing - and unusual - career in a short amount of time. "It's funny to think that just six years ago I never would have imagined doing what I'm doing or living the life that I'm living today," Tim says.
Originally from the Midwest United States , Mr. Williams started his first company at the age of 21 - a telecommunications company which worked with wireless service providers such as Sprint to upgrade their nationwide network to provide second-generation (PCS) services.
In 2003, Mr. Williams was approached by a Costa Rica-based company involved in the newly burgeoning online gambling industry to head that firm's marketing efforts. Little did he know the adventure in which he was about to embark. With bags packed and a one-way ticket to Costa Rica in hand, Mr. Williams decided he was up for the challenge.
It's no surprise other competitors began to take notice, and in 2005 Mr. Williams was approached by Sportingbet PLC, a multi-billion dollar company publicly traded on the London Stock Exchange, where Mr. Williams was offered a position as Brand Manager for the company's third-largest US-facing brand. Williams quickly set about repositioning the brand with sex appeal intended to resonate with the site's core demographic of young males. Through a number of high-profile events and sponsorships, on-message communication, and a more analytical approach to online marketing, Mr. Williams managed to breath fresh life into the brand and nearly double the site's traffic and conversion rates in just nine short months.
In 2006, the U.S. Congress passed the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIEGA) which essentially made online gambling illegal in the United States . It was at this time that Mr. Williams decided to leave the online gambling industry in hopes of putting to use the high-stakes, high-adrenaline experience of the last several years of his career in another industry.
"I decided - after this wild ride, working for just one company - in one industry - would bore me," Tim says. "I decided I wanted to work in an agency environment and have the opportunity to work on a wide range of campaigns for clients in many different industries," Tim continues. "The problem was, after several years of living in paradise, I really didn't want to leave Costa Rica ."
It didn't take long for a solution to present itself. Just two months later, Mr. Williams was offered a position as a Managing Director at Los Angeles - based Pop Culture Public Relations. The dealmaker? That Mr. Williams would be able to work remotely from his home in Costa Rica and only travel to the Los Angeles office if and when necessary. "I couldn't bring myself to leave my adopted home of Costa Rica . I've come to feel truly at home here. Pop Culture PR was a Godsend," says Williams.
At Pop Culture PR, an agency which has specialized in consumer and lifestyle public relations for the past 11 years and which has won numerous industry accolades including "One of the Top 10 Most Successful Marketing Stunts Ever" by Entrepreneur Magazine, and PRWeek's "Campaign of the Month", Mr. Williams served as one of two Managing Directors in addition to agency Principal, Darren Paul.
Tim successfully placed clients in numerous top-tier, national media outlets including The Today Show, Ellen , USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Good Morning America, and many more.
"Always on top of current PR and marketing trends and opportunities, Timothy is quite simply - The Man," comments Darren Paul, Principal of Pop Culture PR.
After a successful run with Pop Culture PR and a long-found passion for PR, Media Relations, and Publicity combined with a depth of knowledge in technology not found often in the PR world, Mr. Williams decided to launch his own agency, DIME PR in 2007.
"While I loved - and still love doing mass consumer and lifestyle campaigns, I felt it was time to let my inner geek come out a bit," Tim says. "As a kid I would write my own computer programs on a Tandy CoCo3 in BASIC. While today I'm certainly far from being a professional coder, I'm still known to write a little ASP or PHP code when necessary and do most of my own web work."
"I have a passion for technology which for several years got sort of sidetracked with the lifestyle I was living and the type of publicity I was involved in. Part of my desire to launch DIME PR came from a desire to reconnect with my 'inner geek' and combine my intimate understanding of tech with my marketing and communications expertise. I think DIME PR clients will be refreshed, working with a firm that doesn't need translation to understand what they're talking about but who at the same time can take often complex technologies and present them in a cool, hip way that consumers and end users can connect with," Tim continues.
"This isn't to take away from the passion I continue to have for mass consumer and lifestyle publicity. I love working with the mainstream press, putting together celeb-filled events, and all of the fun times that go along with our Consumer, Lifestyle, and Entertainment practice areas," Tim says.
"I still love to have a great time too - the parties, traveling - but I am a lot less wild than I used to be," Tim jokes. "I enjoy the simple things in life a lot more now, and moving more into tech allows me to not only reconnect with an industry I'm passionate about but to spend more time working in our Costa Rican offices and less time traveling, which means more time spent with those people I'm closest to and care most about - something which has become much more important to me now," Tim concludes.
Since launching DIME PR, Mr. Williams has received a wealth of praise and positive marks from the agency's first clients and looks forward to working with new clients with a great story to tell.
"What I love about PR is you never know what great client - what great idea, and great story will come next," Tim says.
Mr. Williams continues to live in the small city of San Ramon , Alajuela nestled in the mountains of central Costa Rica . In his free time, Mr. Williams enjoys traveling throughout Latin America and the Caribbean , fine dining, horseback riding, and sportfishing.
