The experience is still fresh in nonprofit board members' minds, says Timothy Kneen, cofounder of IFM Capital Advisors in Greenwood Village, Colo., with $1 billion in AUM.
"If you're a new advisor just starting to work with nonprofits, it's critical to get a board to endorse how you're trying to reduce portfolio risks while maximizing returns to support their operations," Kneen says. "Then, you've got to keep educating them so they don't flip-flop between strategies as market conditions change." He suggests advisors new to the field earn the Certified Investment Management Analyst designation, offered through the Investment Management Consultants Association. Unlike the Certified Financial Planner and Chartered Financial Analyst programs, CIMA coursework includes a "crucial grounding" in the basics of investing for nonprofits, according to Kneen. UBS's Sanchez says working with nonprofits requires more than just looking at an organization's bottom line. "You need to give a lot of yourself in order to gain significant business in this type of a niche," he says.

Timothy Kneen, who left UBS Wealth Management Americas this year to form IFM Capital Advisers, a Focus Financial partner, said that the offerings he found in the independent arena were cheaper in some cases and competitive for his institutional clientele, which includes endowments, foundations and hospitals.
"I can search the planet for where the client's best rate would be," said Mr. Kneen, whose team of two managed about $1 billion at UBS.

IFM Co-founder and Chief Investment Officer, Timothy Kneen reviews the Capital Markets' performance in 2013. Such a high profile move will always attract attention, but when a team like Tim and Clayton's goes independent, it is particularly compelling. Former UBS advisers Timothy Kneen and Clayton Hartman, who managed about $1 billion in client assets, are launching an independent wealth management firm called IFM Capital Advisors, with offices in Denver, Fort Collins and Sioux Falls, S.D. Established by former UBS advisors Timothy Kneen and Clayton Hartman, who managed approximately $1 billion in client assets, IFM has been launched through Focus Connections, a program that helps wirehouse teams successfully transition their business and launch their own independent wealth management firm. Timothy Kneen speaks about investing in the Known Return in a rising rate environment and how investing in income during negative to zero return market environments can protect portfolio principal. Timothy Kneen spoke on the topic around IFM's "Known Return" philosophy. Tim discussed the necessity for institutions who require distributions to re-focus their investment policies around income oriented assets rather than just around Modern Portfolio Theory which never anticipated portfolio withdrawals and discussed the possible negative effects on investment principle.
