Timothy Patrick Cooper, Composer
While at UTK, Cooper received a graduate certificate in music theory pedagogy and taught music theory classes as a graduate teaching assistant. Before moving to Knoxville, he earned a bachelor's degree in composition from West Virginia University, where his professors were John Beall and David Taddie. Several of Cooper's compositions have received regional or national recognition, including Psalm for string quartet (premiered by Osso String Quartet as the winning submission in Lyrica Chamber Music's 2011 Young Composer Competition), Canaan Heights for mixed octet (winner of the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra's 2009 Young Composer Competition and premiered by members of the KSO in April of that year), and At Gethsemane for orchestra, read by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in 2008. In addition, Cooper's music has received honors from the College Music Society and Southeastern Composers League. The Music of Timothy P. Cooper
A native of South Charleston, West Virginia, Tim is currently pursuing the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in composition at The Hartt School in West Hartford, Connecticut. In 2011 he completed the Master of Music degree in composition, studying under Dr. Kenneth A. Jacobs, and Certificate in Music Theory Pedagogy at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. At UTK, Tim taught ear training and music theory classes as part of a graduate teaching assistantship. Tim served as the student representative of the Southern Chapter of the College Music Society in 2010-2011. He is a member of ASCAP, Pi Kappa Lambda, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and has presented his compositions in masterclasses with composers Libby Larsen, David Maslanka, Christopher Theofanidis, and John Corigliano. Timothy Cooper
Timothy Cooper earned the Bachelor of Music degree in composition from West Virginia University in 2008, where his composition professors were John Beall and David Taddie. At UTK, Tim teaches ear training as part of a graduate teaching assistantship in music theory. While maintaining an active schedule in Knoxville, Tim frequently composes and orchestrates music for concert, film and theatrical productions around his hometown of Charleston, West Virginia. With music often taking on environmental or theological subjects, Tim draws extensively on his background in sacred choral music and wind band repertoire. In addition, his background as a trombonist has led to numerous pieces for brass instruments as well as an interest in British brass bands. Tim is a member of the Society of Composers, Inc., the College Music Society, ASCAP, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. Dewar Awards - Timothy Cooper Dewar Awards Timothy Cooper Originally from Darlington, Timothy moved to Scotland in 2006 to complete his undergraduate music studies in Euphonium performance. He continues his studies in music and composition at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland working towards a postgraduate master of composition degree. Timothy is admired by performers and mentors for his combination of great talent and energy in making things happen. He co-founded the successful group edit point which is making great headway in Scotland and further afield.
