The bleachers are already creating a buzz of discussion at the school, Waynesboro High School Principal Tim Teachey said.

"The kids are excited. And the ninth-graders were talking about it during freshman orientation," said Teachey, who displayed a picture of the bleachers to teachers during an initial school year meeting Wednesday.
The longtime tradition of students graduating on school grounds was broken during the graduation ceremony this past spring because seniors were awarded their diplomas at James Madison University in Harrsonburg since the bleachers could not be used.
Teachey said Wednesday he might allow seniors to decide whether graduation is conducted at the high school or another venue such as JMU.

Teachey realizes career milestone

Tim Teachey spent his early post-college years traveling eastern Virginia as a salesman for Roche Biomedical, but ultimately decided it was not the career path for him. "After four years, I went back to school to get certified as a teacher,'' he said of a 1988 decision to earn teacher certification at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. After 20 years as a teacher, coach and administrator, Teachey, 46, realized a career milestone Tuesday night when he was appointed the new principal of Waynesboro High School. He starts the new job July 1. Teachey is confident in the staff he will inherit from current Principal Sue Wright, who is becoming the school district's elementary coordinator of instruction and who also works on k-12 literacy.
I just need to give some direction,'' Teachey said. Instructional team leaders at the high school determine what is best for the departments and schoolwide, Teachey said. "I intend to keep everyone pointed in the right direction," he said. Teachey has been comfortable in his role as assistant principal at Waynesboro High the past three years. He might have been content to stay in that job, but said he has received encouragement from colleagues about the principal's position. One of those colleagues is Wright, who has worked side-by-side with Teachey as principal.
I've learned a lot from Mr. Teachey." Teachey values all experiences he has had as an educator, including his time as boys basketball coach at Waynesboro High.He thinks that experience will help as principal. "As head coach, you have to talk and deal with the public and you have to sell yourself,'' he said."A big part of my job is to sell this place." And, he said, his coaching experience forced him to think quickly on his feet. Teachey also takes the high road on testing. He sees the testing of students required by Virginia's Standards of Learning and the federal No Child Left Behind law as aids to teachers and administrators. "It's another tool to tell us if kids are doing well or not so well,'' he said. The upcoming summer will not be one of leisure for Teachey.
