The marchers include a variety of community members, said Tim Broderick, executive director of People for Life, which organized the bus trip.
One of the largest groups going from the Erie area is 40 middle school students from St. George School. Students from Mercyhurst Preparatory School, Gannon University, Mercyhurst University and Penn State Behrend also are to be on the People for Life buses. Broderick said it's important to have young people along on the trip that takes place each year around the anniversary of Roe v. Wade. "They realize the magnitude of the concern," he said. This is the group's 42nd bus trip to the march and the number of participants is a little better than average, Broderick said. "We think we have a responsibility to keep telling the truth and raising the issues," he said.

Tim Broderick, director of People for Life, an Erie nonprofit opposed to abortion, said the group of about 20 people wanted to point out Wolf's abortion rights stance in contrast to Corbett, who is anti-abortion.

Tim Broderick, director of People for Life, said about 15 percent of the adults on this year's trip are new to the march.
People for Life began making the bus trip when the first March for Life was held. "We've been doing this every year since 1974," Broderick said. He had 208 people signed up Sunday and was hoping to top the record 220 who went on the 2009 bus trip. "This is the second-best," he said. Broderick said he thinks there has been a "gradual growth of interest in the pro-life cause." He said anti-abortion advocates suffered a setback in 2010 with the health-care bill but are encouraged by changes in the U.S. House of Representatives. Broderick said the rest of the participants came from across the community. "We think the March for Life in D.C. is really noteworthy because the attendance is increasing from year to year," he said. Broderick said that increase is especially significant because the event has been taking place for more than 30 years in the middle of winter.
