Thor Tolo comes to KGNW from the world's first commercial radio station, KDKA, in Pittsburgh.
For seven years he
hosted a nightly sports call-in show on the Pirates' flagship station, anchoring Steelers pre-and post-game shows on Sundays during the National Football League season.Four times Thor
was honored as Pittsburgh's best sports reporter and twice his
three-hour show was voted best in the state by the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters
.In 2000 he
received the Pennsylvania Golden Quill award for broadcast excellence.Upon his graduation from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., Thor served as sports editor for Minnesota's oldest weekly newspaper, The St. Peter Herald, and later as a columnist for The Laredo Morning Times in south Texas.In March 1986 he began his television career as a sports producer and anchor for the ABC affiliate in Laredo.
Two years later, at age 26, Thor
became the youngest anchor at an NBC
owned and operated station when WKYC-TV in Cleveland,Ohio hired him in the 12th largest market in the country.His
Great Lakes Emmy Award for Best Sportscaster set the stage for a radio career that began in 1992 at a station now owned by Salem Communications, WKNR
From there, Thor
moved back to Minnesota to anchor post-game programs all along the Vikings Radio Network - first hosting a noon call-in show, then his
own morning entertainment show on KFAN in Minneapolis/St.Paul.In July 1995 Thor
moved to KDKA
wife, Shelly, in the newsroom two weeks later.They have owned their own event planning business (Tolo Events) since October 2002.
