Tom Pedersen is based in Tokyo where he has lived for the past 16 years. He is senior member of our global Leader Excelerator practice and our Consulting Partner for North Asia. In this capacity he works with our clients in areas of organisation transformation and leadership development.
Tom's expertise is in strategic human resource management and executive development for multinational firms in Asia. He has worked across several industries to develop key leadership capabilities and to build effective executive teams. He has worked with companies such as PriceWaterhouseCoopers, State Street, AIG, Morgan Stanley, Yokohama Rubber, General Motors, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT), and Headstrong.
Tom is one of very few Western executives who has held a senior leadership position in a Japanese MNC. He served as the Head of People and Communications Group and Chief Learning Officer for Shinsei Bank. In this capacity, he helped to lead cultural alignment in creating an integrated financial services firm. He led several large organisational change initiatives focusing on sustainable human capital development, and was the transition leader for the 2008 acquisition of the Consumer Finance businesses of GE in Japan. During his tenure at Shinsei Bank, Harvard Business School created a business case of the work led by Tom. He is frequently invited to Harvard to facilitate the case analysis.
Prior to joining Shinsei, Tom served as Executive Director for Morgan Stanley. He led the Asia Workforce Effectiveness team with a focus on leader development, staffing, organisational development, and team learning interventions. As part of this role, Tom developed and delivered leader education throughout Asia for Morgan Stanley's senior leaders and joint venture partners in China and India.
Tom is actively involved in the not-for-profit and education sectors. He sits on the Advisory Board for the Global Council of Corporate Universities, a Paris-based non-profit focusing on aligning social responsibility with corporate learning initiatives. He also sits on the Board of Directors for the Tokyo English Life Line (TELL), providing mental health services for the international community in Japan.
In addition, Tom has taught international business courses at the International Center, Keio University, Tokyo, Japan. Tom has an undergraduate degree in Asian Studies and a graduate degree in Human Resources with an emphasis on Organisational Development.
