Pittsburgh police Officer Tom Jacques said that there are more trucks on the road because of the gas drilling industry.
"Getting on Interstate 79, it seems like one out of four trucks is affiliated in some way with the gas industry," Jacques said. "Many of the drivers are not from this area. I even talked with one company bringing in drivers from Wisconsin because they can't find them around here." Jacques said that one in five trucks on the road nationally is in such need of repair that it should be pulled off until it can be fixed. "It is scary," Jacques said. "I would love to see it down to zero." The problem also extends to vehicles hauling small trailers. "From my own stops, I see seven out of 10 trailers hooked up incorrectly," Jacques said. "Most of the problems aren't severe enough to cause a crash, but we'll be able to show drivers how to properly hook up a boat or utility trailer." Doctors also will be on hand to evaluate drivers' personal health, from checking blood pressure to eyes. Stretching exercises drivers can do after 10 hours behind the wheel of a big rig also will be demonstrated. "A key element to truck safety is the driver," Jacques said. "I like to think of this as a kind of one-day amnesty, kind of like a get out of jail card," Jacques said. "We'll show you what needs to be fixed and how to fix it." Jacques said lunch and refreshments will be provided all day by Pitt-Ohio Express, one of the larger trucking companies in the area.
