Dr. Thomas Aaberg
Dr. Thomas M. Aaberg, Jr. graduated from Dartmouth College and the Thayer School of Engineering. He went on to medical school at the University of Wisconsin and completed his residency training, vitreoretinal surgical fellowship, along with the prestigious chief residency position at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. Following this he completed an ocular oncology fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco. After completing his medical training, Dr. Aaberg became the Director of the Ocular Oncology Unit at Emory University, the Director of Ocular Photography and Ultrasonography, and the Atlanta Veterans Administration Hospital's Retina Service Director. From 2001 to 2008, Dr. Aaberg practiced with Associated Retinal Consultants in Michigan. He has been an investigator in twenty clinical trials, authored over 30 peer-reviewed articles and wrote seven textbook chapters. He completed the American Academy of Ophthalmology's Leadership Development Program in 2007 and received an Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology in 2008. Dr. Aaberg is board certified in ophthalmology and has extensive training in retinal diseases and ocular tumors. He is an active member in the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retinal Specialists, Michigan Society of Eye Physicians, The Retina Society, and the American Association of Ophthalmic Oncologist and Pathologists. Dr. Thomas Aaberg graduated from Dartmouth College His MD degree is from Harvard Medical School (1961) and his residency in Ophthalmology from the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. He then entered the United States Public Health Service for two year and also graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a Masters of Science in Public Health before starting an 18 month fellowship in retinal disease and retinal surgery at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, University of Miami.. During the subsequent twenty years, until becoming Chair Emeritus, December 31, 2007, Dr. Aaberg developed the Emory Department of Ophthalmology into a nationally respected and highly ranked program in clinical ophthalmology with an extensive scientific faculty. He developed an excellent residency training program, highly ranked in the country together with fellowship programs in 8 clinical ophthalmological subspecialties. Dr. Aaberg has personally been involved in the training of 62 vitreoretinal fellows who are in academic or private practice throughout the United States and Canada, including the current President of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Aaberg was Senior Associate Editor of the AJO from 1982-2002, is past President of the Macula Society and past President of the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology.
