Pastor thom.mcleod@flumc.org Thom McLeod is a native Floridian, born in Leesburg, Florida, when his father J. Milburn McLeod was pastor of Morrison Memorial Methodist Church. The family moved to Lakeland, and then to Jacksonville where Thom attended Fishweir Elementary School for 5th and 6th grade and Lake Shore Jr. High (now Middle School) for 7th through 9th grade. The family moved once again to St. Petersburg, where Thom graduated from St. Petersburg High School in 1967. College took Thom to Cambridge Massachusetts, where he graduated from Harvard in the class of 1971. For the next several years Thom was engaged in doing basic biological research at the Biological Laboratories of Harvard, and then worked in technical documentation for computer companies around the Boston area. It was finally in 1981, that Thom responded to the call to enter ministry in the where Debbie served as pastor of Wesley UMC, Coral Gables, and Thom as In 1986 Thom went to Killian Pines UMC in the Kendall area of Miami. Their son, Jack, was born in 1990. In 1992, Thom and Debbie were appointed to serve churches in the Tampa in Hospice Care, Thom felt called once again to the local church and in 2005, he was appointed to serve as the pastor of Silver Palm UMC in Homestead, In 2009 Thom came to Avondale to be pastor of our church here in Jacksonville.

For the man in Florida, that spiritual connection was aided by his hospital chaplain, Thom McLeod.McLeod, who is now the clinical resource for psychosocial spiritual care for VITAS, the nation's largest hospice care provider, spoke with the elderly man repeatedly. Their initial intellectual conversations gave way to what most pained the man: His born-again Christian daughter feared that he would go to hell and that she would never see him again."We talked about how both faiths allowed for an afterlife and how through the love and mercy of God, a father and daughter could never be separated," McLeod says.About two weeks after the calming conversation with McLeod, the man from Broward County died in the most peaceful of settings: at home in his own bed.
