Fort Lauderdale, FL - The Florida Philharmonic (FPO) announced today that distinguished conductor Theo Alcantara will replace previously announced conductor, Uri Mayer in upcoming Masterworks Series concerts.

Theo Alcantara, conductor

Theo Alcantara has recently completed highly successful tenures as Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra in Spain and as Principal Conductor of the Pittsburgh Opera. He enjoys a distinguished reputation as a guest conductor, having appeared with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony, the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Dallas Symphony, the Baltimore Symphony, the San Diego Symphony, the Rochester Philharmonic, the Utah Symphony, the Florida Philharmonic, the New Orleans Symphony, the Vancouver Symphony, the Oregon Symphony and the Seattle Symphony, among others. He has also conducted at the Aspen, Spoleto, Chautauqua and Meadowbrook festivals, and at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center and Chicago's Grant Park.
Maestro Alcantara has performed with many of the major opera companies throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and South America. Other orchestras he has conducted include the Radio Symphony Orchestra Berlin, the Spanish Radio and Television Orchestra, the Salzburg Camerata Academica, the Barcelona Symphony, the Paris Radio and Television Orchestra, the Copenhagen Radio Orchestra, the Simon Bolivar Orchestra of Caracas, the National Orchestra of Mexico, and the Municipal Orchestra of Taipei in a tour of China.
Throughout his career, Maestro Alcantara has held positions with leading musical organizations in both Europe and North America. Born in Cuenca, Spain, Theo Alcantara began his musical training as a choirboy in a Spanish seminary at the age of seven. Later, he received diplomas in piano and composition from the Real Conservatorio de Musica in Madrid and, during that period, toured as a concert pianist and an accompanist throughout Spain, France and North Africa. He received his diploma in conducting from the Akademie Mozarteum in Salzburg, where he also attended the renowned master classes of Herbert von Karajan. There he was awarded the Lilli Lehmann Medal for his outstanding achievements as a conductor. In l966 he won the Silver Medal at the Mitropoulos International Conducting Competition in New York.
