Speaking at the dinner, the Executive Director/CEO of the TY Danjuma Foundation, Ms. Thelma Ekiyor praised the Secretary General for this initiative and stressed the Foundation's commitment to supporting Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) in Nigeria for the effective implementation the global strategy. She urged private foundations in Nigeria and the private sector to generate local resources to address infant and maternal mortality, support the education of the girl child and provide economic opportunities for women.
In his remark, the Secretary General appreciated the TY Danjuma Foundation for supporting the implementation of the Global Strategy for Women's and Children's Health in Nigeria and invited other stakeholders, especially the private sectors, to join the UN in eliminating existing challenges to women's and children's health. He explained that the prevailing environment presents an opportunity for the private sector to invest in improving women and children's health across the country.

Thelma Ekiyor Ms. Ekiyor is currently the Executive Director of the West Africa Civil Society Institute (WACSI). Prior to this she served as Senior Manager for Conflict Intervention and Peacebuilding Support at the Centre for Conflict Resolution (University of Cape Town), South Africa. Before that, Ms. Ekiyor worked as the Director of Programmes for the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP) in West Africa. At WANEP, Ms. Ekiyor founded the Women in Peacebuilding Network (WIPNET) and also served as its first Regional Coordinator. Ms. Ekiyor also founded and was Executive Director of Connect Synergy, a private consultancy firm working on peace and security issues in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria, and is a Co-Founder of the Women Peace and Security Network Africa (WIPSEN-Africa). As a trainer, researcher and conflict analyst, Ms. Ekiyor has served as resource person to the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue in Geneva, the United Nations (UNIFEM, UNDESA, ECA, OSAGI and UNITAR), the Africa Union, and Regional Economic Communities (specifically ECOWAS, SADC, IGAD and ECCAS). Ms. Ekiyor serves as an International Board Member to ISIS WICCE in Uganda, and Global Centre on Responsibility to Protect in New York. She has written and published extensively on civil society, peace and security on the African continent. Ms. Ekiyor is a past Fellow Stanford University, USA. She holds a LLB Honours in International Law, and Graduate Studies in Alternative Dispute Resolution
