Principal Thalia Chaney was ecstatic to learn her school won its appeal, and no longer will carry the "failing" stigma. The school originally was dinged because of the participation rate - in other words, not enough students were tested. But Chaney was able to prove that students who had withdrawn from the school prior to testing were counted as absent. "It was very disheartening having 99 percent of kids in attendance that day and then missing because of non-participation," she said.

"Hearing that our appeal had been granted, receiving praise from the superintendent and letting the world in on our achievement confirmed our belief in each other, as well as in our mission," said Thalia Chaney, principal of Nimitz.
