Artist Teri Frame Changed the Way I Wear Clay Post 7 of 58‹‹›› September 23, 2013platteforumBlog, Creative Residency, Newsno comments Artist Teri Frame Changed the Way I Wear Clay
Ceramic performance artistTeri Frame, our resident this past summer, works with clay, performance, video, and ideas. Really amazing ideas. The best part of my job here at PlatteForum is getting to watch the artists as they work, help them in any way I can, and, with Teri Frame, really get a hands-on (and for this full-body) experience! In fact, we marshaled an amazing army of community volunteers to help in the process of Teri working on her new project and in supporting the ArtLab interns she was working with. But this post is about what it feels like to have a role in her process. The first stop in this adventure was being the model for her demonstration for the ArtLab students in casting wax/plaster molds of their faces.

Teri Frame was trained as a ceramist, she has expanded to performance, video and collaborative activities. Themes within her work include notions of human beauty and proportion, genetics, eugenics, genetic engineering, identity and aesthetic surgery. Teri examines how notions of beauty and proportion relating to aging, disease, disability and race. "Non-normative" bodies have often been shunted from the human realm to that of the animal. Disfigurements in the form and surface of the human body are often marginalized. Those who bear such marks are estranged from public life and are often animalized. http://www.teriframe.com
During her residency she will collaborate with ArtLab youth to create a video that directly addresses their subjective experiences concerning contemporary notions of beauty. She will also create a performance piece based upon those conversations concerning contemporary notions of beauty as represented in the media and pop culture.

During her residency, Teri Frame led ArtLab interns through a comprehensive summer session filled with rigorous process and critical conversations exploring various themes reflected in her personal work. These themes include "normative" ideas of beauty, proportion, genetics, race and identity. Each intern explored various methods of mold making using wax, plaster and clay to create a literal interpretation of their own face and head (called clones by the youth). By starting conversations concerning contemporary notions of beauty as represented in the media and pop culture the students begin to take on a new perspective in respect to their own face. After completion of their clone Teri challenged each intern to curate a collection of photographs that expressed their take on issues discussed in the Learning Lab sessions.
