This year the winning senior selected was Miss Tawyana Athey
, an 18 year old, who is planning to continue her
education this fall at Old Dominion University
in Norfolk.While a member of the National Honor Society
and active in the Student Council Association
became interested in marketing and advertising and hopes to make that her
career. She points out that students graduating from Goochland High School have strong computer skills and have studied basic financial subjects such as how to read the stock market reports, shop for insurance, interpret charts and work with statistics.These courses have qualified her to be employed this summer as an office temporary worker which will make it possible for her to save money for that big leap into the future in the fall.
"I am going to live on the campus which is the first time I will be away from home for such a long period of time.I'll miss having my mom always right there...but I'm looking forward to being on my own!"she
also plans to keep her
other job this summer as a waitress at the Beth Shalom Retirement Residence
has worked during high school. Her
mother, Marilyn Owens, was a cheerleader at Goochland High School
met Paul Athey, a member of the football team, and they subsequently married.Tawyana's brother, Paul Jr. is a fifth grader at Goochland Elementary.
"My advice to my brother about high school is, 'Be yourself and don't follow other people - they may lead you wrong.'" Tawyana
cousin, who was a teacher from New York, for first talking to her
about having the goal of getting a college education.
Growing up Tawyana
sang for eleven years with the County Line Baptist Church Choir.She
did volunteer work at the Meadows Nursing home during high school.
says, "I'm a friendly, outgoing person and most people I meet seem to like me. I've had trials in my life that could have stopped me but I never let them.
has numerous friends and well-wishers who are cheering her
on as she
leaves to pursue her
dreams this fall.
