This year the winning senior selected was Miss Tawyana Athey, an 18 year old, who is planning to continue her education this fall at Old Dominion University in Norfolk. While a member of the National Honor Society and active in the Student Council Association, Tawyana became interested in marketing and advertising and hopes to make that her career. She points out that students graduating from Goochland High School have strong computer skills and have studied basic financial subjects such as how to read the stock market reports, shop for insurance, interpret charts and work with statistics. These courses have qualified her to be employed this summer as an office temporary worker which will make it possible for her to save money for that big leap into the future in the fall. "I am going to live on the campus which is the first time I will be away from home for such a long period of time.I'll miss having my mom always right there...but I'm looking forward to being on my own!"she smiles. Tawyana also plans to keep her other job this summer as a waitress at the Beth Shalom Retirement Residence where she has worked during high school. Her mother, Marilyn Owens, was a cheerleader at Goochland High School when she met Paul Athey, a member of the football team, and they subsequently married.Tawyana's brother, Paul Jr. is a fifth grader at Goochland Elementary. "My advice to my brother about high school is, 'Be yourself and don't follow other people - they may lead you wrong.'" Tawyana credits her cousin, who was a teacher from New York, for first talking to her about having the goal of getting a college education. Growing up Tawyana sang for eleven years with the County Line Baptist Church Choir. She did volunteer work at the Meadows Nursing home during high school. Continuing, Tawyana says, "I'm a friendly, outgoing person and most people I meet seem to like me. I've had trials in my life that could have stopped me but I never let them.Tawyana has numerous friends and well-wishers who are cheering her on as she leaves to pursue her dreams this fall.
