Taryn Oestreich, MPH, MCHES is in the trenches working several positions concurrently - for the Veterans Health Administration (VA) - Health Sciences Research and Development division, Seattle Children's Hospital, the University of Washington and Western Washington University. At the VA she trains staff for the national Shared Decision Making for Aging Veterans project and serves on the Veterans Health Education and Health Promotion and Disease Prevention (yes, they call it hippy dippy) Committees. For Children's she recruits and trains instructors for community education classes and helps staff safety education events. Taryn also teaches college courses at the University of Washington. She delivers the Enhancing Connections education intervention to parents with a stage 4 cancer diagnosis who have children ages 5 to 17. And, she has been teaching college courses to "mature students" - that's college speak for students over 23 - for over 30 years.

Programs Chair Taryn has been a member of the PNW chapter for over 25 years; she is a former President and helped to establish the Job Bank in the era when listings were recorded on an answering machine. She works several positions concurrently - editing for the Patient and Family Education Services department at University of Washington Medical Center; team-teaching courses for Western Washington University; coordinating babysitting classes, fitting bike helmets and doing consulting work for Seattle Children's; delivering an educational intervention to spouses of women diagnosed with breast cancer for a research team at University of Washington; teaching first aid, CPR and infant safety courses at Overlake Medical Center; promoting the online Guide to Long Term Care for the VA; and doing contract consulting, writing and editing for numerous clients. Her areas of interest include maternal child health, injury prevention, developmental pediatrics, patient and family centered care, health literacy, school health issues, hospital-based patient education, and active training. She has coached, mentored or supervised over 100 health educators entering the field, returning to the field or moving to the greater Puget Sound area. She's a Girl Scout leader and chair of the administrative council at Cedar Cross United Methodist Church.
