"As I understand what the family told us, at some point in the 1970s, family members in America became aware of these letters in France," said Tara Laver, curator of manuscripts for the LSU Libraries Special Collections.
"They eventually decided to donate them to us," Laver said.
"The letters provide a window into colonial Louisiana with details of struggles to cultivate and market crops, relationships with Armand Duplantier's slaves and his family life," Laver said.
