Dr. Talma Botts
, chair of the Computer Information Systems Department, will be presented with the 2002 Claudia and W. T. Barnhart Teacher of the Year Award and will be the commencement speaker.The Barnhart Award is a $2,000 cash award given in recognition of teaching excellence by the Temple College Foundation
from an endowment established in honor of Claudia and W. T. Barnhart.Dr. Botts
also is the Temple College nominee for the prestigious Piper Professor Award given annually for teaching excellence in colleges and universities throughout the state. Dr. Botts first came to Temple College 28 years ago as a student.After completing the associate of applied science degree in 1976, she transferred to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor where she received a bachelor of science degree two years later.After graduation from UMHB, she worked six months in the Temple Water Department as a computer operator before taking a teaching position at the college.She has been a faculty member in the Computer Information Systems Department since 1979 and is presently chair of the CIS department and a full-time computer instructor.
"I have loved every minute of my 28 years at Temple College
said."As a student, it gave me the opportunity to get a college education and meet many new friends.It also helped develop the self-confidence I needed to become a teacher.As an educator, Temple College has afforded me many opportunities that might not have been possible otherwise.I have had the opportunity to spend the past 23 years with a group of people who have become my second family.I also have been able to meet an entirely new group of students every semester, many of whom I am in contact with now."
believes that education is a lifetime endeavor and enjoys following the progress of her
students."I believe that individuals should never cease to learn," she
said."I teach because there is nothing more rewarding than to see a student succeed.Seeing the "light come on" in students' eyes when they finally get a concept they have been struggling with continually reminds me why I chose this profession." Dr. Botts also has a master of science degree from the University of Central Texas and a Doctor of Education degree from Baylor University.She is recognized in Who's Who Among American College Teachers in 1998, 2000 and 2001 and is a member of the Texas Community College Teachers Association.On campus, she is a member of the Faculty Council and serves on the Information Technology Advisory Board.
Immediately after the commencement ceremony a reception will be held in the assembly room of the Expo Center
