T.C. Swartz

During more than three decades in the travel business, T.C. has been a pioneer, developing unique expeditions involving innovative means of travel to many new destinations around the world. He founded and developed Society Expeditions, with which he pioneered travel to many remote destinations during the 1970s and 1980s. The company became the world leader in expedition cruising, being the first to operate two expedition ships year-round to the Antarctic, Amazon, Seychelles, Easter Island and dozens of other remote destinations. Under his leadership, Society Expeditions operated the first West-to-East cruise through the Northwest Passage, and flew the first commercial travelers to the South Pole. He also founded the American Orient Express, the first luxury private train to operate on a year round basis in the US. In 1989, T.C. founded Private Jet Expeditions and became the first in the world to operate expeditions to remote destinations with specially outfitted aircraft, a concept he further developed with two additional private jet companies he founded, TCS Expeditions and Starquest Expeditions. T.C. received a B.A. in Economics from Iowa State University and an M.B.A. from the University of Illinois.

T.C. Swartz, the founder of the expedition company TCS Expeditions, outlines the trip and practicalities at dinner. "This itinerary was planned for the destinations and the monuments, not for the hotels" he reminds us.

Dinner ends early, because the larger of our two suitcases (the other is a small wheelie) must be outside our rooms by 9:30. (Packing and unpacking will be a daily chore.) I have a drink with T.C.--who has been in the adventure-travel business for more than twenty-five years--and his wife, who aren't joining the trip. "This all began with a postcard," he explains. "Two years ago I listed exotic, remote places that many people want to visit but haven't. Within weeks my first trip sold out." So have the subsequent ones, because he offers comfort, individual attention and intellectual stimulation in wildernesses like Tibet and Mongolia. As I head up to bed, he says: "It's better to travel 100 miles than to read 100 books--an old Middle Eastern proverb."
DAY THREE, PETRA, JORDAN.
