Ron Kordes and Suzie Pignetti Named 2012 AVCA National High School Coaches of the Year
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 19, 2012) - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) is proud to announce that Ron Kordes, head girls' volleyball coach at Assumption High School in Louisville, Kentucky, and Suzie Pignetti, head girls' volleyball coach at Charlotte Latin School in Charlotte, North Carolina, have been selected as the 2012 AVCA National High School Coaches of the Year.
'What Suzie Pignetti and Ron Kordes have contributed to volleyball goes far beyond winning championships, although both of them have done plenty of that with 15 and 17 State titles between them," said AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer.
Suzie Pignetti is a 35-year high school varsity coaching veteran, boasting a career record of 745-150. As the current head coach of Charlotte Latin School in North Carolina, her teams have won nine consecutive State Championships. She has been at her post with Charlotte Latin for the past 12 years, and has 15 total State Championships to her name.
Pignetti won her ninth Straight NCISAA 3A State Championship with the Charlotte Latin Hawks on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012. Despite her team being down 0-2 in the finals against conference rival Charlotte Country Day, she calmly coached her team back to a 3-2 win. In 2012, she skillfully steered her team through a season riddled with injuries, losing her libero to a broken leg midway through the season and losing a middle to a broken finger the week before the state tournament. Her last-minute roster adjustments included moving veteran players to new positions and building confidence in less-experienced players that were pressed into action. Her only loss this season was to #1 ranked South Carolina Hillcrest High School in an early season tournament final.
Pignetti followed up a 40-2 2011 season by posting a record of 38-1 record in the 2012 campaign. Several of her players will be moving on to play collegiate volleyball next season, and her ability to mold young players into top form is evident in her consistently high level of success.
Kordes and Pignetti were selected from an outstanding group of nominees, which included: Amy Fisher (Nevada), Becky O'Neal (Texas), Brian Rosen (North Carolina), David McGinnis (Tennessee) Deanna Meyer (Utah), El Mehdi Alaoui (Virginia), Jenny Gray (Tennessee), Kelly Drobeck (California), Kelvin Hasch (Maine), Kris Kern (Ohio), Pauline Thiros (Idaho), Rich Coleman (Ohio), Ryan Mitchell (Texas), Stefani Legall (Georgia), Ron Lehman (Ohio), Tom Stephenson (Virginia) and Zach Young (Missouri).
The AVCA will formally present the National High School Coach of the Year awards to Kordes and Pignetti at the 2012 Jostens Coaches Honors Luncheon in Louisville, Ky., on Thursday, December 13.
As a result of winning AVCA National Coach of the Year honors, Pignetti and Kordes will lead Team East and Team West in the fifth annual Under Armour All-America Volleyball Match & Skills Competition, Friday, December 14th at the KFC YUM!
Suzie Pignetti - Coach Of The Year
Carolina Juniors Volleyball History
Charlotte Latin School's assistant ..., 7 Feb 2013 [cached]
Charlotte Latin School's assistant athletic director and head varsity volleyball coach Suzie Pignetti will retire in June of 2013, Headmaster Arch N. McIntosh Jr. announced today.
Pignetti has been head volleyball coach at Latin since 2001, laying the foundation in that first year for the era of dominance of Charlotte Latin volleyball in both the CISAA and the 3A NCISAA conferences. With Pignetti at the helm for the past 12 years, the Latin volleyball team won 11 consecutive conference championships and nine consecutive state titles. Over her 35-year coaching career at Latin, Butler High School and Charlotte Country Day, she compiled a win-loss record of 745-150, which is the North Carolina coaching record for the most wins. Coach Pignetti led her teams to 29 conference championships and 15 state championships. She coached 18 high school players and 35 club players who have gone on to play at the collegiate level.
Pignetti was named the AVCA 2012 National High School Coach of the Year and coached Latin's All-American Eve Davis and the All-America East Team in the 2012 Under Armor All-America High School match. Pignetti has been named the Charlotte/Mecklenburg Region Coach of the Year eight times, won the 2006 USA Volleyball Meritorious Service Award for outstanding service to volleyball in N.C., was a 1998 Ben Craig Outstanding Educator finalist, won the 1993 Outstanding NC Educator Award and was a founding coach of the Carolina Juniors Volleyball Club, serving as its director since 2004.
With all of those credits to her name it is obvious that Coach Pignetti is an expert in teaching and coaching volleyball; however, she was never complacent in her abilities. Coach Pignetti is an innovative coach who continually researches for better ways and the best tools to teach and coach her sport. In 2002, she brought a new system of teaching, playing and coaching volleyball to Charlotte Latin, which was and is still being employed by the U.S. National Teams. She credits this system with the consistent level of excellence with which the Latin teams have played.
The true legacy Suzie Pignetti will leave as she retires at Charlotte Latin is one of excellence in player leadership, accountability and trust among the players. She has built a "program" with tradition, fostering a sisterhood among the players that extends well beyond their time at Charlotte Latin. Her former players and their parents frequently return to support her and her teams as they compete for titles - to once again be a small part of their shared accomplishments. Coach Pignetti will be remembered for the amazing career record she achieved, but her true legacy is the disciplined, confident, hardworking and caring young women her program has produced.
"Zoe is widely recognized and respected as a winning volleyball coach in North Carolina and surrounding states," says Pignetti.
