The winter heating season this year was an especially difficult one for many in Westport, including seniors, and Suzanne Lebrija, special services social worker for the Westport Department of Human Services, reported at the meeting that a mix of funds from the town, state and private sources provided between $200,000 and $250,000 in aid in response to 260 requests for heating assistance, which, Lebrija said, represented an increase of 90 over the previous year.
Reached for further comment after the meeting, Lebrija
said that the total number helped included 120 seniors, including one woman who was living with the thermostat at 58 degrees.
