"It's a passion, you don't go into teaching if you are planning to make a lot of money or if you're planning to have an easy job sitting behind a desk," said Dr. Susan Neimand, who is the director of the School of Education at Miami-Dade College, in a recent Miami Herald article.
Dr. Neimand went on to say that teaching is a calling and, therefore, there will always be people interested in the career regardless of the economy. "We are very aware that they are not going to get the very best jobs in the plum schools," said Dr. Neimand. "Their jobs are going to be in the most challenging schools. In this economy you take the job that you can get." Since the program was introduced in 2003, Miami Dade College has graduated 515 new teachers. According to Neimand, 89 percent of those teachers are working in their field.
