SUSAN R. CRYSTAL joined the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa as its Minister Counselor for Public Affairs in August 2010.
The U.S. Mission to Canada is comprised of Embassy Ottawa and consulates/representative offices in Halifax, Montreal, Quebec City, Toronto, Calgary, Winnipeg and Vancouver.
The public affairs sections conduct U.S. public diplomacy programs in Canada including cultural, educational and professional exchanges, cultural and informational programming and media and electronic outreach.
Just prior to her assignment in Canada, she served as the Director of the Office of Alumni Affairs at the U.S. Department of State.
The Office of Alumni Affairs coordinates engagement with alumni of international exchange programs in collaboration with U.S. Missions and various offices within the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State
A career Foreign Service Officer, Susan has held public affairs/public diplomacy positions in Australia, South Africa, Mauritius, Ecuador and Haiti.
In Washington, she worked in the Office of Youth Programs, the Support for East European Democracy (SEED) Office and the Office of Andean Affairs at the State Department and the former U.S. Information Agency.
She holds a B.A. in International Relations from the Pennsylvania State University and speaks French and Spanish.
