Born and raised in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province in Thailand, Surin received his first degree in Political Science in 1979 (Singh'28)from Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok Thailand.Between 1979-86, Surin worked as a journalist with a number of news organisation in Thailand, including The Nation, Naew Na and AP (Associated Press).In 1986, Surin received an East-West Center scholarship to do his postgraduate studies at the University of Hawaii, where he received a PhD in Political Science in 1991.Surin spent three and a half years as a research fellow at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS) before joining James Cook University in 1995.Surin has been guest lecturer at the Australian Defense Colledge (ADC) and a member of the Board of the Thai National Studies Center, ANU.
