Mr Sunil Jakhar, Parliamentary Secretary (Irrigation and Horticulture), Punjab, today defended the Termination of Water Agreements Act and said mere construction of the SYL canal would not solve the problems of the farmers of northern region.
Punjab might have to reel under water and power crises till the next monsoon season. All senior leaders and experts would have to sit together and consider ways and means for the best utilisation of water resources as these were in scarcity. There should be no politics on water as it was the lifeline of agriculture-oriented Punjab, he said.
Mr Jakhar said the funds made available by the Union Government for diversification of crops should be utilised for the conservation of water.
