"It's kind of like the days of Apple and IBM where your stuff was so proprietary that it didn't lend itself to giving you the flexibility you needed," says Sue Todd, product marketing manager for KnowledgePlanet.com.
"So if you lock yourself into one training provider, you potentially lock yourself out of all the others because you have to go through so many hoops to get that training deployed."
In an effort to make it easier for corporations to choose, deploy and track training providers, KnowledgePlanet.com
, which has for years managed training for companies, has introduced its Planet-Certified content program.Planet-Certified adopts and certifies e-learning content for integration with the KP2000 Workforce Performance Management system.
has done, Todd
says, is essentially remove the customer's need to integrate all the providers' proprietary technologies and other nuances by integrating all the content into the KP2000 platform.
"What we've tried to do is take all the detail out of it by integrating it with our platform so you can pick anyone and be sure it will work," she
Another problem that Planet-Certified hopes to address, Todd
says, is tracking results from different providers within the same company. If different departments within a company are using different providers for their training, which, she
says, is often the case, when the time comes to compile the results of all that training, it is not easy.
"With results from different providers stored in different places, there's no way to pool them together in a simple way," she
says."It's virtually impossible."
Currently, content from several providers, including SmartForce, NETg and SkillSoft, has been integrated into KP2000 using Planet-Certified.Todd
says this is just a start.
"We haven't done everybody in the universe yet, but we're working on it," she
But for the companies whose content has already been integrated, Todd
says, customers can be sure that those offerings will work seamlessly across KP2000.
"Once you know that we've stamped our Planet-Certified approval on it, whatever features the content provider offers, the certification process on our end says we have definitely integrated this stuff and every feature they say they have our application supports," she
company's work to that of a water or electric company that builds the infrastructure that various other companies use to deliver their product to customers.
"It's as if we have the piping structure, but there are a number of providers where you can get the water," she
