Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Sudhir Parikh, publisher of News India Times and recipient of India's Padma Shri award, said although Sardar Patel is Gujarat's native son, he observes Patel's birth anniversary, not as a Gujarati, but as an Indian.
"That's because Patel is first and foremost a great Indian - one of the founding fathers of modern India," he said. Adding that Patel was a Gandhian, he said Patel is the architect of the physical India as we know today. "Patel was called Sardar for a good reason," he said. Both Mulay and Parikh also brought to light Sardar Patel's contributions during India's struggle for freedom. Sardar Patel was one of the first leaders who favored partition the subcontinent, even though Mahatma Gandhi was totally opposed to it. It was Sardar Patel who convinced Jawaharlal Nehru, Rajendra Prasad and Rajagopalachari to opt for full partition plan than the loose federation plan that the Muslim League was willing to accept, Parikh said. "And people only remember how Sardar Patel was instrumental in getting the reluctant Princely States to integrate into India," Parikh said, adding, " But few realize that Patel out maneuvered the Muslim League and was instrumental in retaining even East Punjab and West Bengal in India."
