PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC - Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar has named Subhas Panday, the brother of former prime minister Basdeo Panday, to the post of Leader of Government Business in the Senate.
"I have asked Subhas Panday to take the post of Senator and to also be the leader of Senate business in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago," she said.
The Pandays were omitted as candidates of the United National Congress (UNC) for the May 24 general election that was won by the UNC-led People's
Partnership, an amalgam of five opposition political parties and trade unions.
Persad Bissessar had earlier this year won the leadership of the UNC party that was founded by the former prime minister in 1988.
Persad-Bissessar described Subhas Panday
as a 'loyal soldier' with the younger Panday telling reporters he
was honoured to be offered the position.
"I feel so gratified that she
has placed so much confidence in me.
I feel honoured to be placed in this post.
I promise her
and I promise the country that I will do my best in any circumstances," said Panday
