We came up with the idea of providing teachers with real-world experiences," said Steven Lawrence, assistant superintendent of curriculum and assessment.
"It gives teachers the opportunity to learn some things that will allow them to reflect on their curriculum and think, 'Am I doing a good job in creating pathways for these students if they choose to go this route? Is there something I'm not emphasizing that would be a good skill for them to learn?' In the Roseville Joint Union High School District, Assistant Superintendent Steven Lawrence said he wants students to do better, even though they outperformed students statewide.
"We want to continually reflect on how we did last year and where are our areas of improvement and our needs for growth," Lawrence said."We have very good schools, and our challenge is to continually improve."
He said Oakmont, Roseville and Woodcreek high schools are working to bring their scores closer to those at Granite Bay High School, which has the county's highest passage rate on the exit exam.
"Right now Granite Bay is our top performer, and our other schools are figuring out ways to improve," Lawrence said.
"Roseville High School is focusing on putting support classes in place to ensure that their students not only meet the state standards but exceed them."
But exit-exam performance is only one measure of a school's success, Lawrence said.In addition to the state's standardized tests, he said, the district looks at what percentage of students pass advanced placement classes, how many take the SAT and how well they perform and what percentage of students fulfill the University of California course requirements.
