The whole time we were making this record I kept getting e mails and calls from a guy named Steve Tramposch
from New York City.Steve
introduces himself politely via e mail and states that Tim Hall (owner of Jackrabbits night club, Jacksonville, Florida) has contacted him and mentioned that a band called Red Jumpsuit
is blowing up faster than that Violet Girl in Willy Wonkas Chocolate Factory.
I tell Steve
politely that we're working on the record and when it's complete I'd get him a copy (thinking to myself "whoever you are dude").Needless to say he
was persistent and called or e mailed every couple of weeks to see when he
could get a copy. The record took a month or two longer than we thought it would take to finish, he
probably thought I was blowing him off, but he
kept at it.Needless to say I wanted "NO ONE" to hear the record until I gave the final word that it was ready to shop.
I never took the time then to find out who Steve Tramposch
actually was because I was so focused on getting the record done.
So finally we get the record done and have 1000 copies pressed and I get one off to Steve
and a few others that have been waiting to hear this young band.Steve
gets the record and calls almost instantly and wants to come to Jacksonville ASAP to see this band live.A few weeks later he
comes to Jacksonville to see the bands completely sold out show at The Freebird Live, Jacksonville Beach (Jacksonville, Florida's premier hot spot for up and coming acts).
The next morning when we finally have a moment to talk personally and exchange 'resumes' if you will, Steve
interest in managing the band.
I was quicly sold on Steve Tramposch
because it was clear to me that he
was a true music lover and a true music guy.He
explained that he
had a full understanding of old and cutting edge music and he
truly believes the RJA
is something that is going to be huge on the national and international level.I won't bore you with all of the details of what was said that morning, but I knew then and there that I was talking to a guy who was the only person I've met in the music business that felt could add something to this regional success of this band.
So having that discussion with him gave me a better insight of how he
A&R position at Elektra
combined with years of hard work I'm sure.He
never once boasted of what he
could do for the band as every other manager who wanted RJA
had done.He never promised anything but his best efforts and "that" became the deal closer for me.
I can't stand industry people that fill musician's heads with pipe dream illusions of what is going to happen. There are no guarantees in life, and certainly none in the music business. But still wanting to protect my boys in RJA I made a deal with Steve
can manage the band under the condition that they can pull out of the contract in the first 90 days for any reason. He
agreed without hesitation. We came to an understanding; the band would continue under my production in the studio and I would continue to push the marketing efforts in North Florida.Steve
was to take on the role of management and gaining more label interest from New York and L.A.We would continue that way, me as producer and he
as manager, without stepping on the others toes.
Seems simple right?Wrong! Now came the hard work for me because not a one of the RJA boys wanted Steve to be their manager, nor did they feel they needed a manager of any kind period.
So I call a meeting at my house with the band and say "I know you're all going to think I'm nuts but I want you to sign the management contract with Steve Tramposch
out of N.Y." At this time Steve
had seen the band live and come and gone from Florida and was back in New York.
This is where Steve Tramposch
brought in that additional push.Steve
had many more record labels flying to Jacksonville to catch a show in addition he
had the labels flying the band from L.A. and N.Y to showcase their talent forA&R's Presidents of labels. After many showcases and label offers RJA
finally signed a very promising multi record deal with Virgin Records
.Steve Tramposch has since been hired as the Senior Director of A&R at Virgin Records and President of Virgin Records; Jason Flom, was personally involved with RJA's signing.
Together, Vision Sound Studios
and Steve Tramposch
took a group of high school friends and signed them to a very promising multi record deal with Virgin Records
in only 15 months from the day we met.
