BOWLING GREEN -- Hollywood may have movie goers believing that polygraph exams can be performed in a matter of minutes and this is not the only inaccuracy about "lie detector" tests portrayed in popular culture.
"A polygraph takes about 2 to 2 and a half hours.
There's a pre-test that's done prior to when you actually run the charts and once the pre-test is concluded, and test questions have been gone over with an individual, then the charts are obtained," BCI Polygraph Examiner Steven Stechschulte explains of the process.
As the Polygraph
Examiner for Ohio's Bureau
of Criminal Investigation office in Bowling Green, Stechschulte
administers tests for the Ohio
Attorney General's Office and law enforcement agencies from 24 counties in northwest Ohio.
That is reason that while most polygraph examiners perform between 30 and 50 tests a year that Stechschulte
performs closer to between 180 to 220 exams a year.
In addition to exams given to criminal suspects and some state employees, Stechschulte
administers test to potential witnesses.
"We can polygraph [witnesses] ...If they are not sure if the information is reliable, they may want to polygraph them to verify the information before they continue on with the investigation," Stechschulte
