"He retired from our organization at the conclusion of the 2011/2012 school year," said Steve Salerno, the associate superintendent of human resources with the La Crosse School District.
Since Salerno's retirement, he has stayed involved through coaching and substitute teaching. However, the school district is taking steps to handle the situation. "I actually have sent him a letter indicating that given the allegations made for his behavior that we will not be in need of his services until this matter has been properly vetted through the court system," said Salerno. Emmel is out on bond after paying $15,000. He is scheduled to be back in court July 17. If he is found guilty, he could face up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.

“We can do some just in time if you will academic support rather than waiting through the end of the summer to get that kind of remediation we can do it right in the middle of the school year, said La Crosse School District associate superintendent of human resources Dr. Steve Salerno.

The practice is becoming a nationwide trend, said Steve Salerno, associate superintendent of human resources for the La Crosse School District.
"It is parity in curriculum and equity in funding," Salerno said. "It is using what we know about helping boys and girls achieve to their advantage." That can mean engaging girls in math, science and computers, he said, or promoting composition, reading and the arts among boys. "It's not what is taught that is different," Salerno said. "It's how we teach that's different." Salerno came to La Crosse from Janesville, where single-gender classes had received positive feedback for several years. He was principal at a middle school with about 1,000 students, of which a third were involved in a same-sex class. "You can take the smartest girl who could be the next valedictorian and they will dumb themselves down," Salerno said.
