Every day is Saturday for former Seattle Deputy Fire Chief Steve Oleson, who retired six months ago after a 38-year career.
Oleson, 67, had watched windsurfers in the warm waters of Maui and in the Columbia Gorge flying across the water, doing stunts, gaining altitude. There wasn't much surfing in Wichita, Kan., where he grew up. It's harder than it looks and, according to the instructor, much more difficult and unstable than stand-up paddle boarding. But Oleson said he was up to the challenge: "Let's enjoy this thing." On the sailboard, balance is delicate, and Oleson takes one tumble after another into the cold water. But, as a single retiree who likes travel and sports, Oleson says, "Ladies, look me up."

Deputy Chief Steve Oleson said crews had to remove window bars to access the house, but became hindered by storage boxes near the entrances.Firefighters had additional difficulties once inside the two-bedroom home "Where a ceiling would normally have drywall that you could punch, this was solid plywood," Oleson said.He said that's not an uncommon find in older homes. The South Juneau Street house, which had major water damage and a hole in the roof, was built in 1906, according to property records.Firefighters extinguished flames in an attic crawl space and said nobody was home when the fire began.Oleson said a woman told firefighters a box of fireworks was inside the house, but none appeared to ignite, and a firefighter search found none.

Deputy Chief Steve Oleson estimated there were between 150 to 200 passengers aboard at the time.Firefighters used two ladder trucks to bring passengers down to street level."We're just going to take our time, taking people down nice and easy," he said.
