However, Steve Kamp, a Spring Grove City Council member and the safety manager at Northern Engraving, does not see doom and gloom ahead.
"I don't have the attitude that the sky is falling," he said Sunday. "I have the attitude that we're in a tough spot, but we'll work our way out of it. And maybe we'll be better for it." Northern Engraving plans to begin letting workers go on Feb. 13. That process might take a while, maybe into the summer, Kamp said. Kamp said the union contract signed with Northern in April included many employee concessions and the understanding that the company would help keep the Spring Grove plant open. Kamp, who has worked at Northern for 10 years and is also losing his job, is more concerned about laid-off workers finding new jobs. "I think a large portion could be out of work for a long time," he said, adding that many of the workers are older and haven't worked anywhere else but Northern Engraving.
