Steve Hamblet, district manager, Rayne Dealership Corp., said that exchange tank dealers - or any water business that involves transportation of some sort - should focus on their routes. Computers can assist in making routes more efficient - you might be able to drop a half or even a whole route. "We are looking at our salt deliveries and putting higher minimums and therefore less trips," Hamblet said."Make-up deliveries are very costly." With gas prices climbing, Hamblet noted people understand deliveries cannot be completed without charges for extra service.4. Keep an eye on your neighbor Neighboring dealers might be eager to pool purchases to join in savings."Look at purchases and see if buying bigger quantities (by teaming up with neighbors) will bring bigger discounts," Hamblet said.

"Obviously, we've got concerns," says Steven Hamblet of Rayne Dealership Corp. in San Jose, who adds that the joint venture has been a major topic of conversation among California dealers. "I put a call in to [San Jose Water]," says Hamblet, who runs a portable exchange tank business."We send them a lot of money every month. We're clearly the dominant rental company in the area. And they never contacted us to see if we were interested." Hamblet questions why a California water company would choose a water conditioning technology other than portable exchange tanks, which promote more efficient salt use than some other designs and allow for controlled disposal of softener brine. Hamblet and other dealers also wonder why a water utility would want to advertise equipment that implies their basic product is less than perfect.
