Big Morongo Canyon and south of the Riverside County line is managed by Palm Springs BLM. Stephen Razo, Director of External Affairs for the BLM California Desert District described the workshop as a pre-scoping meeting designed to gather public comments about the new monument. "This [meeting] gives us a direction on which road to head down when it comes to beginning the monument plan analysis," said Razo. After collecting public comment, the BLM will begin the NEPA Process – The National Environmental Impact Assessment Review.
There will be a formal follow-up meeting for recorded comment. Two documents – one on the environmental side and one on the public side will eventually be turned into an official management plan. This process will take about three years. "We are very excited about this," added Razo. The home and studio of Steve and Ruth Rieman sits high in the Pipes Wash in Landers with sweeping views of the area and Steve Rieman's majestic sculptures placed strategically around the property. The Landers Post Office was another example of water-wise landscape planning – economical and appealing.

The BLM is planning to post information about its signage plan within the next week, said Stephen Razo, external director for the BLM's California Desert District.
