It had not been determined where or how the girl, whose name was not disclosed, contracted the rare, sometimes fatal bacterial infection, Sussex County Health and Human Services Administrator Stephen Gruchacz said.
Gruchacz cautioned against assuming that the girl contracted meningitis at the summer camp, saying she only began visiting there last week.It takes anywhere from 2 to 10 days for symptoms to appear in people infected with meningitis, he added.
"The child may have contracted it prior to going to camp," Gruchacz said, adding that letters were being mailed to those believed to have come in contact with the girl.
