Stephen Roland Dattels
Stephen Roland Dattels Non-Executive Co-Chairman Stephen Roland Dattels, Canadian, was appointed as Non-Executive Co-Chairman of the Board in February 2008. Mr Dattels is an experienced senior mining executive, and was one of the key executives at Barrick Gold Corporation (whose shares are dually listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange) during its formative years before leaving in 1987. He has helped to form and finance a number of mining ventures, including UraMin Inc, an African based uramium company. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree from McGill University, a law degree (cum laude) from the University of Western Ontario and has completed the Program for Management Development at Harvard University. Mr Dattels is also the executive co-chairman of the board of Fast Forward Innovations Limited (formerly known as Kuala Limited) (which is listed on the Alternative Investment Market (" AIM")). He was: (i) a non-executive director of GCM Resources plc (an AIM-listed company), having resigned on 26 June 2013; (ii) a non-executive co-chairman of the board of Polo Resources Limited (an AIM-listed company, having voluntarily withdrawn its listing from the Bermuda Stock Exchange on 23 May 2014), having formerly been the joint executive chairman of its board and re-designated as a non-executive director on 2 July 2013 and having resigned on 17 October 2013; and (iii) the chief executive and an executive co-chairman of the board of West African Minerals Corporation (an AIM-listed company), having resigned on 17 July 2013.

Mr. Dattels is a seasoned senior mining executive and is Executive Co-chairman of two companies listed on the AIM market of The London Stock Exchange, both of which are in the mining sector: Polo Resources Limited and West African Minerals Corporation, where he is also Chief Executive. In late 1982 he joined Barrick Gold Corporation and was one of the key executives during its formative years, where he was involved in the company's growth from a capital base of US$10 million to a market capitalisation of over U$2 billion when he left in early 1987. Since leaving Barrick, Mr. Dattels has been a mining financier of numerous mining ventures in several continents in diverse commodities including gold, uranium, copper, iron ore and coal. In 2005 he founded UraMin Inc., which acquired and developed uranium assets in Africa. The Company was sold in August 2007 to Areva, the French Government-owned, fully integrated nuclear company for cash consideration of approximately US$2.5 billion. He is also an active investor in oil & gas exploration in Africa. Mr. Dattels is currently a Non-Executive Director of AIM listed GCM Resources plc and Non-Executive Co-Chairman of Hong Kong listed Regent Pacific Group. Now, a significant new gift from Stephen Dattels (LLB'72) in the area of mining law and finance will help prepare Western University law students to play a role in one of Canada's most vital economic engines.
This gift builds on Dattels' previous gifts to Western Law that have helped support the faculty's January Term course in mining law and finance and the Stephen Dattels Chair in Corporate Finance Law. "Stephen Dattels' generous commitment of $1.525 million will deepen the school's expertise in the important field of mining law and support future mining law leaders," says W. Iain Scott, Dean of Western Law. "We are truly grateful for Mr. Dattels' leadership and support." For more than two decades, he has been active in international mining markets spearheading projects in North and South America, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, China and Russia.
