BY FATHER STANLEY MAKACINAS, O.CARM., DIRECTOR In preparation for the new ice wines that the monastery vineyard will be producing, the former gift shop at the Mount Carmel Spiritual Centre in Niagara Falls, Ontario, was completely renovated to look like the early 1890s, when the hospice was built and used wines produced on the monastery grounds for guests.
"It has been a unique adventure discovering many of the original features of the early hospice as the renovations went forward," said Father Stan Makacinas, O.Carm., Director of the Mount Carmel Spiritual Centre.

BY FATHER STANLEY E. MAKACINAS, O.CARM., DIRECTOR, MOUNT CARMEL SPIRITUAL CENTRE It has been a dream of mine when I was prior back in 1978," mused Father Makacinas, now the director of the Mount Carmel Spiritual Centre in Niagara Falls, Canada. In 2010 the Ontario Government introduced a grant program to boost alternative energy sources.
Mount Carmel was the 23rd applicant. The government would fund 90% of the necessary studies in order to connect to the existing electrical power grid. Rick Vanderkuip, Energy Consultant for RV and Associates, and Belinda Anderson, consultant to Father Stan, successfully guided Mount Carmel through all the regulatory requirements and agencies. Stanley Makacinas, director of the Mount Carmel Spiritual Centre, said it was his dream to try and do something with the open field and a vineyard seemed to be the perfect answer. "Our founding monastery is from Germany, it's about 700 years old, and they made wines and they also brewed beers. The Reif family tradition goes back about 300 years and they are also from Germany," said Makacinas. "There's a bit of connection with the history and the whole idea of producing something from the earth." "We are pretty excited about this project and to be working with Klaus," said Makacinas.
