Fort Bend ISD Board Trustee Stan ..., 28 Sept 2011 [cached]
Fort Bend ISD Board Trustee Stan Magee called the proposed raises inadequate, and said teachers "really deserve $2,500" in the form of an annual raise.
The proposal is about half of the amount sought for teachers by the Fort Bend Employee Federation, which has asked for a 4.5% salary increase, in addition to the $425-per-teacher provided by the state.
"Texas is still 37th in the nation in terms of teachers pay. I think this district needs to step forward and make a commitment to our employees - and they're not doing it," Magee said after the meeting.
He indicated money for more generous raises could be found in the district's undesignated fund balance - an account somewhat similar to a contingency fund. Magee said the fund contains sufficient money to pay for 80 to 85 days worth of district operating costs, while the district's policy recommends only keeping enough to operate for 30 to 45 days.

It seems that Knox, Bain and Clarke are having a temper tantrum and want the Texas Education Agency to pacify their desire to derail the efforts of Trustees Rickert, Bryant, Magee and Caldwell to bring some fiscal accountability and responsible management to the District.
2) Send a note of support to each of the members of the Board majority (Rickert, Magee, Caldwell and Bryant).
Mr. Magee asked questions to confirm that there was a policy in place that determines what employees qualify to participate in the plan.
During audience items, a group of parents represented by two speakers from Hunters Glen elementary appeared before the Board for the third time this year to ask that Hunter's Glen be redesignated a hazardous area and qualify for bus service again. (The District abruptly stopped bus service to the area last school year.) When the agenda item later came up for consideration, Trustee Magee moved to table and Caldwell seconded.
Caldwell and Magee both stated they would like to look at the new information presented by the community before rendering a decision.
To which Magee and Caldwell explained that this was the first time they were hearing it and requested time to review it before a vote. (more background on this story below)
