Charlie Steffens and Spencer Gorin, co-authors of Learning to Play, Playing to Learn , Curriculum and Activities for Classroom and Playground Management , started Creative Spirit in 1992.
Charlie and Spencer have given hundreds of teacher-oriented seminars throughout North America in utilizing therapeutic play to manage aggressive behavior in children, build their self-esteem, foster cooperation, cultivate their social skills and invigorate academic performance. Spencer Gorin Spencer Gorin Spencer has designed and facilitated programs for mental health organizations that used art, play, and music therapy; groups that dealt with relationship building, relaxation, creative visualization, sexuality, personal safety and values clarification; and therapy sessions for individuals, groups and families. In 2009, Spencer created, The Buzz, an original, innovative and interactive alcohol education program for the University of Arizona, now utilized at other universities. He writes monthly for the Red Cup Q & A column published in the Arizona Daily Wildcat and is a health educator/consultant on various UA projects focusing on college student mental health/wellness in the areas of alcohol education, alcohol diversion programming, suicide prevention, healthy relationships, and LGBTQ issues. Spencer is also a semi-gifted and modest artist, songwriter and musician. In the four years since Gorin and Steffens founded their Healthy Play training program they have worked with 30,000 students and more than 2,000 teachers in several states.
In animated dialogue, Steffens and his pouty alter ego, "Skippy," acted out disruptive behavior with Gorin, who represented the teacher or classmate. "These are the kids that usually control the classroom, " Gorin said. The key, they say, is in sidetracking that behavior and encouraging those students, through creative play and innovative games, to learn proper social skills and to think of the feelings of others. If teachers cannot resolve a student's disruptive actions, every other student in the classroom stops learning. "We often work in systems where there are two kids in the classroom who are always arguing or always fighting," Gorin said. Gorin said the program shows teachers how to encourage students to practice sharing, caring and honesty. The benefits include better self-esteem, more cooperation, improved social skills, less-aggressive behavior and a supportive and positive peer culture. "There are many other programs out there, but what makes ours different is that ours is so succinct and unique and elegant to use, and it's incredibly fun," Gorin said. Spencer Gorin 520-878-9223
