Diamonds are Sonny Groom's best friend. Baseball and softball diamonds, that is.

Since the age of 13, Groom has been involved with Babe Ruth Baseball, first as a player and later as a coach and administrator. Today, Groom is Babe Ruth's Southwest Regional Commissioner for softball.
After more than 45 years affiliated with Babe Ruth sports, Groom has taken with place with some of the state's all-time greats, as he was inducted into the Louisiana Babe Ruth Hall of Fame on Jan. 12 in Plaquemine.
Groom is the first person inducted on the softball side in the state's Hall of Fame, which was formed in 2015.
"Deep down in your mind you always hope and think that you may get there one day," said Groom, who has been living in Burleson, Texas, since 2009. "I am still humbled. When I found out, my mouth flew open and didn't know what to say."
Groom was inducted into the Hall of Fame with the city of Houma and Terrebonne Parish Recreation Department.
...
While baseball was his first love, Groom said he jumped at the chance to start up the state's Babe Ruth softball program in 1996. He tried to juggling both sports, but he eventually had to make a tough decision.
"I felt like I was doing neither program justice because I was having to split my time," he said.
...
Groom said he will never forget the 1992 World Series.
"We have the distinction of the place where a World Series was never completed because Hurricane Andrew was coming," he said. "It was a crazy time, and we didn't get the last team out of here 12 hours before Andrew hit."
Despite the ups and downs along the way, Groom said Babe Ruth is about giving an opportunity to play baseball and softball.
"As I can continue to help or teach kids the game, I will always do it," Groom said. "It's a great sense of pride when I know that I am helping kids."
At the age of 69, Groom said he has no plans of slowing down.
"As long as I am healthy, I will continue doing this because I really enjoy it," he said. "Babe Ruth baseball and softball has more or less molded my life."
