Monday's meeting was held at Columbian Elementary School, and Sonia Resa, principal, gave the board an overview of student performance, noting fourth-graders had scored better than the state average in math and communication arts.
She also praised efforts by Carthage Bright Futures to help students at the school.

"This was our first drill like this, and it helps us analyze our system for the space we have for the students," said Columbian Principal Sonia Resa.
"This way we can go back and talk to teachers to see what our space looked like. Safety is always our number one concern, and we practice these drills praying we'll never have to use them. But you have to be prepared for a disaster." For Columbian's 450 student body, Resa said she was pleased with the drill. "I felt the students did a nice job moving quickly yet safely to their destinations," she said. School Principal Sonia Resa welcomed the veterans.
"For the elementary children, many of them haven't had a lot of experience with death, and we try to keep it in the forefront of our students' minds," Resa said.
