Solomon Jones had these traits when he was a star at DBCC.He expanded on them during an All-Big East career at South Florida.
Now Jones is performing on the biggest stage of all.
As a member of the Atlanta Hawks, Jones is the first player from DBCC to play in the NBA.
...
"I just never doubted myself," Jones said."I always tried to have high expectations of myself.I always wanted to play well, because I thought I had the chance to be in the league some kind of way."
As a rookie, Jones is averaging three points and two rebounds per game for a Hawks team that is 8-11.Jones, who was a second-round draft pick, has played in 16 games and has provided Atlanta with an energetic presence off the bench to complement the brute strength of fellow rookie Sheldon Williams.
...
The Hawks are high on Jones and fully expect him to have a long and prosperous career as a pro player. You should also know Jones was forced to overcome some obstacles to get to this point in his career.
It's well known Jones was forced to play his way onto the NBA radar following his senior year at USF.It's also well known that Jones being taken with the 33rd-overall pick in last June's draft was somewhat of an upset.
But that was hardly the last hurdle Jones was forced to leap.A sprained ankle caused him to miss all but one exhibition game in training camp.It was an injury that caused Jones to slip down the Hawks' depth chart.
...
If Jones truly has an NBA skill, it's his ability to block shots. And that skill has been on display whenever he plays. He blocked a career-high five shots against the Orlando Magic on Nov. 25.But he's showing he can do more than just block shots. He scored a career-high 14 points to go along with five rebounds last Sunday against the Sacramento Kings, and he's starting to make his reputation as a high-energy player off the bench.
But his greatest accomplishment is that he's in the rotation. He can expect minutes on a nightly basis.
...
For Jones, it's been a rapid ascent to the top of the basketball world. But, if anything, he serves as a role model to the players at DBCC, who no doubt are having a tough season with a 1-11 start. No doubt, he's an extra recruiting tool when showcased as a player who made it to the highest level.
...
Jones, he said, was simply a player who decided to work hard on the court and in the classroom. He was a player who constantly worked on his weaknesses and turned them into strengths.
"I think this is great for Solomon," Dunne said.

Solomon Jones made the start for the Birds in place of the injured, but not naked, Al Horford and there was much rejoicing (yay).
...
Jones, a known fouler, actually stayed out of foul trouble (only one in 21 minutes) and was fairly effective in his role (6 points, 5 rebounds). That Jones' rebounding total was more than double that of Zaza Pachulia (2 boards, no offensive rebounds) while playing fewer minutes than Zaza (29) says less about how well Jones played than it does in telling how the Hawks got completely outworked on the glass.
Mo Evans tried to be a leader in Game Five, but in this one he got caught up in the Hawks Flu--whose symptoms are complaining about the officiating and bad shooting.

SOUTH BEND -- When his boys came calling with offers to soak up the summer sights and sun at the beach, South Florida center Solomon Jones retreated indoors to run and shoot and sweat.
When his boys came calling again for an evening out on Florida's Gulf Coast, Jones remained obsessed about and working toward those winter nights in East Rutherford, N.J., in Syracuse, N.Y. and in Northern Indiana while playing in the nation's most competitive college basketball conference.
Whether morning, afternoon or night, Jones could be found last summer in the same spot on the Tampa campus -- in the gym working on his shot, lifting weights and conditioning himself for his last year of college basketball.
>
"I dedicated my whole summer to this season," Jones said."I knew this was going to be a tough year with the first year in the Big East.It was going to take a lot more commitment and that's why I worked."
The endless hours of effort have paid off for Jones, if only individually.Heading into tonight's game at the Joyce Center against Notre Dame (11-10 overall; 2-8 Big East), Big East newcomer USF still is in search of its first conference victory (6-17; 0-10).With every near-miss, conference coaches have learned more about the Mount Dora, Fla., native.
Currently second overall in the league in rebounding at 9.9 per game, Jones also is second in blocked shots (3.13) and tied for second with Notre Dame counterpart Torin Francis in defensive rebounds (6.1).
...
Asked last summer by Bulls coach Robert McCullum to provide at least 14 points per game this season, Jones is averaging a career-high 13.4, second-best on the squad.
...
"I think Solomon Jones is an NBA player," said Irish coach Mike Brey.
...
Jones spent two years at Daytona Beach Community College before a series of hurricanes in 2004 delayed the transfer of his academic transcript to USF.Not wanting to risk his Division I eligibility, Jones steered clear of the basketball program. He was not cleared to officially join the team until a week before preseason practice. He then stepped into a starting spot and led the Bulls by hitting 54.6 percent of his shots. He averaged 6.6 points and 6.0 rebounds a game while working with just over 210 pounds on a wiry 6-foot-10 frame.
...
Jones listened and spent last summer with the weights. He now weighs around 230 and can handle all the heavy lifting required of big men in the Big East.
...
"We just tend to let up for a few possessions," Jones said.
...
"We're right there," Jones said.
