PiCASO is actively recruiting new board members!
Dr. Sloane Burke's career includes over 11 years of teaching in higher education and 10 years experience in the nonprofit field. She has worked with agencies such as Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the American Red Cross, and The Humane Society. Dr. Burke received her Ph.D. in Health Studies from Texas Woman's University and earned her M.S. in Health Promotion from the University of North Texas. She is a Certified Health Education Specialist and is a long-standing member of the American Public Health Association, Society for Public Health Education, and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance. Dr. Burke was awarded the Kitty Magee Honor Student Award from TWU in 2003 and the Outstanding Employee Award from the Komen Foundation in 1999, 2000, and 2001. She is currently a Public Health Fellow with the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill Emerging Leaders in Public Health program and in 2008 received the Judy B. Baker fellowship for service at East Carolina University. r. Burke has published professional journal articles on women's health, instructional technology, and was a contributing author for a published book and booklet series on breast cancer. r. Burke's research interests include women's health, health disparities, nonprofit management, intimate partner violence, and the psychosocial aspects of living with chronic diseases such as HIV/AIDS. he is currently working on an HIV/AIDS trucker risk assessment and educational outreach research project. he is an assistant professor at ECU where she teaches both undergraduate and graduate in-class and online courses in health disparities and nonprofit management and is the faculty co-advisor for Eta Sigma Gamma in the Department of Health Education and Promotion. r. Burke enjoys traveling, kayaking, and cycling in her spare time.

Burke has over 10 years of experience in course development, curriculum design, assessment, accreditation, and university instruction, and has taught various (over 20) undergraduate- and graduate-level public health courses, both in class and online.Prior to coming to ECU, she co-created, developed, and administered the first ever B. S. in Health Studies online program at Texas Woman's University.
