That Moment When: Simone Manuel
In that moment, 20-year-old Manuel reached her goal of medalling in her first Olympics, achieved a record time for the event, and became the first African-American woman to win an individual gold in swimming. 48,000 meters: The distance Manuel swims each week during practice at Stanford University

I've been particularly moved by the story of Simone Manuel, a 20-year-old swimmer from Texas who tied for first-place in the 100-meter freestyle and won the gold in the 4×100 meter medley, as well as two silver medals for the USA.
Manuel's story is inspiring. At four years old she wanted to join the swim team; her parents figured it was time to sign her up for swimming lessons. By eleven, she was team swimming and dedicated to doing her best. She's a student at Stanford now, where she swims on the Stanford Cardinal women's team, has broken all kinds of records, won all kinds of awards, made her parents and coaches all kinds of proud. Simone Manuel is also a Christian. She and her family attend the Church Without Walls in Houston, and the young swimmer repeatedly gave glory to God in her spoken comments, tweets and hand-gestures throughout her time in Rio. Long after the Olympics are over, names like Simone Manuel, Steele Johnson and David Boudia may fade from our memories.
