Hopper bottoms meet tough quality specs | Farm Forum

"It all goes back to the work order," says Sid Lockhart, Meridian's marketing manager based in Camrose, AB.
"That work order follows the unit through the whole production process. Inspectors sign off on every step; if there's a problem we can track it down to a specific coil of steel or worker." The company's quality control process starts with its steel purchase, says Lockhart. "The support structure is an integral part of our finished product," says Lockhart. "Because so many of our hopper bottoms are used for products like seed grain and fertilizer, they're quite heavy compared to normal." The next step is putting on the sidewall. The just-manufactured cone is mounted to a jig and placed on its side. Then the sidewall is tacked and welded on. "The construction process is similar to that for the hopper," says Lockhart. "Each four- to five-section sheet is tacked and butted together so there's no place for hang-up of any commodity that can get stuck." Sidewall sizes range from 10 to 40 feet with a variety of weight gauges. "Those gauges vary throughout the sidewall," says Lockhart. "Robots are very good where you have a process that's intricate or repetitive," says Lockhart. You can't do that with powder coating because the chemical reaction when you bake it magnifies flaws," says Lockhart.

"We are happy to award the first of three 4,100 bu. hopper-mounted grain bins to Davidson farmer, Gerrid Gust," says Sid Lockhart, marketing manager for Meridian.

Sid Lockhart with Meridian Manufacturing kneels next to a section of the AirMax aeration system for hopper bottom bins.
Lockhart says it will take about two to three hours to install the aeration cylinder in each bin. "The cylinder itself is well built and extremely durable and it is held in place by very sturdy mounting brackets," says Lockhart.

Last week I talked to Sid Lockhart of Meridian Manufacturing Group at the Farm Progress Show in Regina, Saskatchewan about their new AirMax Aeration system.
The system was designed to retro-fit to existing hopper bottom bins. Lockhart says the demand for retro-fitting existing bins comes from farmers recognizing the value of aeration in contributing to a more valuable crop. "Grain quality losses cost farmers millions of dollars annually," says Sid Lockhart, marketing manager of Meridian Manufacturing Group.
What sets Meridian AirMax apart is that the new system allows farmers to enhance their existing grain storage, protecting their investment in the bin," says Lockhart.
