developed a career in the U.S. Air Force
joined the military in 1960, having already studied martial arts for two years.After serving 10 years as an enlisted airman, the Air Force sent him for advanced training.Upon graduation he was appointed an officer and served a distinguished 22 years in Military Intelligence, earning the rank of Major.
assignments was a tour of Vietnam where his
aircraft was shot down twice, he
was twice captured and twice escaped.It was during his first military assignment in Japan that Mr. Palumbo began his study of Hakkoryu (School of EightLights) JuJutsu that would culminate November, 1963 with his earning the rank and title of Shihan-only the 5th non-Japanese to earn that ranking.
As with most military careers, Mr. Palumbo
moved about the world.He
returned to the United States in 1964 where he
taught Hakkoryu JuJutsu while earning his
Shodan (lst Degree BlackBelt) in Shotokan Karate one year later.In 1966, Mr. Palumbo
returned to Japan and remained there for four years, continuing to teach Hakkoryu
, and studying Shotokan, Shudokan and Goju-Ryu Karate.Once again stationed in the U.S., Mr. Palumbo began teaching his craft at the University of Colorado.During the next 10 years, he continued both his educational and martial arts efforts, receiving his promotion to Sandan (3rd degree Black Belt) in Shotokan Karate and both his Bachelor of Science Degree in Transportation and Manpower Management from the University of Colorado and his Master of Science in Psychology, Counseling and Guidance from the University of Northern Colorado.
had received a personal request in 1970 from Soke Okuyama, the Head Master of Hakkoryu Jujutsu, to return to Japan for personal instruction, it wasn't until 1980 that Mr. Palumbo
was able to work with head Master Okuyama.In the summer of 1986, following intensive training and testing, Mr. Palumbo
was awarded the title of San Dai Kichu (Three Great Foundation Pillars)--the highest ranking possible in Hakkoryu JuJutsu.Sharing his
